Lucifer stood in the middle of his bedroom, ghosts of memories floating around him, their voices reaching him muffled as if through howling wind. He could hear Lili’s sharp inhale as she came on his fingers just a few feet away, and Cerny’s soft laugh at a joke Luc told weeks ago, and Bernard’s vulgar cursing as he shoved into the room in a foul mood, and Russ’s endless rant about a TV show that’d been cancelled mere days before Lili arrived in Iarlon.

This room held years of memories, and the palace beyond it told a thousand stories of his past, his family, and his friends. His mistakes and his failures. The ghosts were everywhere, hissing at him, accusations and jeers that twisted his stomach into near sickness.

He was supposed to be packing, but he couldn’t find anything he cared about enough to put in the black bag Renna had shoved into his hands.

The mental link between him and Cerny had been silent for too long. Silent since the moment Luc had pulled back sharply, Cerny’s explanation of what had happened to Lili—what Gabriel had told Lili—ringing in his ears.

The mirror on his wardrobe door reflected a shattered, haggard man. Luc didn’t recognise himself. He needed Lili back. “They’re closing in on the breach,” Hal told him, his round, ruddy face unusually grim. “We need to move out now.”

Luc nodded and grabbed the bag of weapons, clothes, and ancient, priceless books he’d thrown together, heaving it over his shoulders and then gently lifting the bundle of velvet he’d laid on the bed into his arms. Carefully tucked within were Lili’s wings, the edges forever stained with her blood. She didn’t need them now, not with the new wings generated by her new power, but he couldn’t leave them behind. And he’d been taking care of them for so long, assuming she’d need them reconnected to the scar tissue of her back the way his had never been able to—because he had no idea where they’d been discarded after they were torn from him—that it was habit by now.

He didn’t want to think about his lost wings, or his Fall, or the archangel responsible. His once best friend. His mortal enemy.

“Let’s go,” Luc said, clenching his jaw against the dark thoughts.

Hal nodded, too preoccupied with the evacuation—and the impending collapse of their city, of
